Principal, Chief Information & Operations Officer
Pzena Investment Management, LLC
Hi Evan, could you tell us a bit more about your background and role at Pzena Investment Management?
I have been with PIM for 15yrs and have been lucky enough to be a part of a fantastic team of individuals focused on delivering premier deep value investing to its clients. My background stems from operational management and over the years have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in the IT space. This has positioned me for success in overseeing operations, technology, and cybersecurity at our firm.
Naturally, MiFID II has been top of most asset manager’s agendas at the start of 2018. How do you think the industry – particularly in the US – has responded to the regulation so far?
Thus far it feels like the industry is still adapting to the new regulatory environment coming out of the EU. My observations on the response from asset managers is that it seems that most global managers are ringfencing their EU business. It also feels like we are all heading to a P&L world with respect to soft dollar usage but only time will tell.
GDPR is another European directive set to have significant implications in the US. How do you see this affecting your data governance framework and the way your firm protects clients and their data?
Data governance was already a priority for PIM but GDPR will certainly accelerate some of the things we have already been working on.
Away from regulation, data visualization and business intelligence are areas that many asset managers are looking to develop in order to understand their customers more and derive value through data. What steps have you and Pzena made towards this, and what potential lies ahead in the near future?
This is a project that we have been working on for some time now. We are starting to see some internal value from the BI/Visualization work that our team is focused on and we are going to continue developing the capability by incorporating additional datasets from internal and external sources. We are successfully integrating our IT and operational resources to drive this initiative forward.
At TSAM New York, you’ll be taking part on a cyber security focused panel discussion. Cyber threats have been around for a number of years but are constantly evolving. What would be your top tip for keeping up-to-date & protected against the latest threats?
Let’s be clear, there are now 3 certainties in life. Death, taxes, and getting hacked. It is essential the we create a level of awareness that creates a “human firewall” to make everyone a part of the security solution. Then make sure you know how to respond when something happens!
